MEDIUM HIGH is an admitted closet-clearing collection of old demos, leftovers, and re-recordings, much of it created before the band's debut EP and subsequent full-length, COLD & KIND. From a mediocre band, it'd be an irritating stopgap. But this Chicago group's retro-pop aesthetic is so refined and appealing that the additional material is a blessing. Reminiscent of "psychedelphia" bands like the Twin Atlas, or New York's the Ladybug Transistor, the 1900s play the kind of sad-wistful, gorgeous pop that never seems to age.
